omniroute - self-hosted ai gateway for coding agents

About OmniRoute

Self-hosted, MIT-licensed AI gateway that puts one OpenAI-compatible endpoint in front of a large multi-provider model catalog. Point Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Cline, or Copilot at localhost:20128/v1 and it auto-falls back to the next provider when a quota runs out, stacks free tiers, and compresses tokens. Local-first: keys and history stay in SQLite on your machine, no telemetry, no account. Note the trade-offs: provider counts drift between official pages, and draining stacked free tiers can conflict with some upstream providers' terms.

Key Capabilities

One OpenAI-compatible endpoint (localhost:20128/v1) for 16+ coding agents including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Cline, and Copilot

Auto-fallback across a 300+ provider catalog when a quota runs out (vendor counts drift between 339 and 350)

90+ providers with a free tier, 56 listed as free forever; no credit card needed

RTK + Caveman stacked compression, vendor-claimed 15-95% token savings depending on content

Built-in MCP and A2A servers expose the whole gateway to agents

Local-first: SQLite on disk, AES-256 encrypted credentials, no telemetry, MIT license

59,000+ GitHub stars within seven months of launch (Feb 2026)

Standout Features

Quota-Aware Auto-Fallback

Circuit breaker per provider, cooldown per connection, lockout per model; the next provider takes over when one runs dry

Token Compression

RTK + Caveman stacked compression on tool output and context; vendor claims 15-95% savings on eligible tokens

Local-First Privacy

Keys, usage, and history in SQLite on your machine with AES-256 encrypted credentials; no telemetry, no account

Perfect for

Claude Code & Codex power users
Cost-first indie builders
Local-first self-hosters
MCP/A2A agent operators
